The Greener Home Loan & Home Efficiency Rebate (HER) program In Toronto
Updates to funds available for Homeowners Under Combined Home Energy Programs
- The new Home Efficiency Rebate Plus program includes rebates of up to $5,000
- The Canada Greener Homes Loan is a government, unsecured, 10-year, interest-free loan for up to $40,000 for retrofits eligible under the rebate program.
- For some eligible heat pump systems this can mean as much as 10% of the after tax installed cost is covered by a rebate. Remember, you can also maximize your rebate for other items like insulation, and then use your rebate dollars to purchase heating and cooling equipment that may not be eligible under this program, but will still make your home more efficient and comfortable.
- We all have to focus on the overall goal being to both improve a home’s ability to retain heat, while improving the efficiency of the equipment that gets us there.
The process is straightforward, and starts by contacting an accredited Home Energy Advisor (we have included a couple of suggestions for you below) for a pre-retrofit energy assessment. They will provide you with a report that provides your starting point. There is also an updated list of Advisors on the Enbridge website.
Read below and visit the various websites for details. Keep in mind that these government programs are subject to change at any time and are based on available funding, so the sooner you start the process the better.
Canada Greener Homes Loan
Loan details:
Maximum: $40,000
Minimum: $5,000
Repayment term: 10 years, interest-free
Loan type: Unsecured personal loan on approved credit
The maximum eligible loan amount is calculated based on the retrofits selected in the application and the quotes for this work. The eligible amount is capped based on industry standards and market norms. The maximum eligible loan amount may be less than your quoted cost in which case you will be responsible for funding any difference.
A maximum of one loan is available per eligible property and homeowner.
The loan can only help you finance eligible products and installations that are part of a retrofit that is both recommended by an energy advisor and eligible for the grant.
To begin work in your home, a portion of the loan can be delivered to you up front as contractors often require a down payment for these types of projects. The balance of the loan will be delivered upon successful completion of the retrofits, and verification through a post-retrofit evaluation.
