Knob and tube wiring was installed between the late 1800s and the 1940s and is commonly found in the attics, walls, or crawl spaces of older homes in greater Toronto and the surrounding area. The wiring is insulated in black cloth and the knobs are white ceramic cylinders. Modern wiring is white or yellow and much, much safer.
Knob & Tube Replacement & Inspection Services
Knob and tube wiring is not grounded, and at Belyea Bros. Heating, Cooling & Electrical, we found that the wiring has often been modified in ways that increase risk. The wiring is typically poorly insulated, stretched, and showing an alarming amount of wear and tear. In most cases, the outdated writing system can’t handle the energy demands of a modern household. Plus, the outer covering of knob and tube is designed to dissipate heat created by electric flow. With today’s insulation practices, that causes a problem. The packed insulation restricts heat dissipation.
