Air Conditioning Design Criteria
Air conditioners are manufactured and installed according to industry standards established by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers or ASHRAE. Standard design conditions are established for every city in North America. In Toronto, we design a residential air conditioning system to achieve an indoor temperature of 75 F (23.8 C) when the outside temperature is 88 F (31.1 C). This assumes a well designed and unrestricted duct system to properly distribute air throughout the home.
This is the design criteria followed by the Ontario Building Code. There are a number of other factors that can restrict the effectiveness of residential air conditioners such as older, undersized ductwork, inadequate fan capacity and poor insulation. There are also a number of behavioral factors that influence humidity levels in the house.

Spacepak High Velocity Central Air Conditioning Installation
Spacepak systems are high velocity air conditioning systems that are set up and function in a similar way to an Attic Pak. They are most commonly used in older Toronto homes over 2200 sq ft that have hot water heating systems (radiators/radiant in-floor) or electric baseboard heat. The condensing unit is placed outside the house with an air handler in the attic. The difference between the two systems lies mainly in the smaller outlets of the high-velocity Spacepak. The outlets are only two inches in diameter, however, a minimum number of outlets are required; for example, a two-ton (24,000 BTU) system would require a minimum of eighteen outlets. While it is easy to run this many outlets to the floor directly below or beside the attic space it can be far trickier to find enough room to run ductwork down to additional floors, especially in finished homes.
However, they are exceptionally quiet and efficient and can be installed with very little difficult especially when incorporated into your design plans and renovations.
Spacepak at-a-glance:
- Ideal for older homes over 2200 sq feet with an attic space & hot water (or electric) heating
- Ideal for Older Homes over 2200 sq feet with forced air systems where the air conditioning cannot adequately cool the upper floor(s)
- Spacepak air handler & outdoor unit from Trane (in most applications)
- Can be installed throughout the year (except in extreme weather conditions)
- Programmable thermostat
- Very quiet operation
- Annual maintenance is strongly recommended to ensure efficiency & ensure drain lines are checked
Attic Pak Low Velocity Central Air Conditioning Installation
An Attic Pak Low Velocity Central Air Conditioning system is an attic based central air conditioner most commonly used in Older Toronto homes (up to 2200 sq ft) that have hot water heating systems (radiators / radiant in-floor), or electric baseboard heat. As well, there are circumstances where an Attic Pak will be installed to cool the second floor of a large home with ductwork that has poor cooling on the upper level.
In many older homes with forced air, the fan in the furnace is not powerful enough to push dense, cold air up beyond a second floor. An Attic Pak system utilizes the natural density of cold air to drop down throughout a house creating an incredibly efficient cooling solution for most homes.
A conventional outdoor condensing unit is placed beside the home. The line-set from the condensing unit then runs up the wall to the attic where an air handler is installed. The air handler regulates the flow of cold air down into the house through six-inch outlets. When we install this type of system we use flexible ductwork to run from the air handler in the attic to outlets in all the rooms directly below or beside the attic space. We then run the same flexible or solid ductwork down through closet or cupboard spaces to reach other floors.
Attic Pak at-a-glance:
- Ideal for Older Homes under 2200 sq feet with an attic space & hot water (or electric) heating
- Ideal for Older Homes under 2200 sq feet with forced air systems where the air conditioning cannot adequately cool the upper floor(s)
- Matched Carrier air handler, Carrier outdoor unit, Trane Air Handler & Trane Outdoor Unit (in most applications)
- Can be installed throughout the year (except in extreme weather conditions)
- Programmable thermostat
- Very quiet operation
- Annual maintenance is strongly recommended to ensure efficiency & ensure drain lines are checked
